That “warm glow” you get when you give a gift or donate to a charity?
It turns out that the act of giving floods your body and brain with dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Known as the “Happiness Trifecta”, these neurochemicals produce powerful mental and physical health benefits.
What impacts do these happiness chemicals actually have on us?
Here’s what I found out..
Psychology Today explains that oxytocin (the cuddle hormone) boosts your mood, counteracts the effects of cortisol – the stress hormone – enhances bonding, empathy, decreases blood pressure and inflammation.
Serotonin helps improve sleep, digestion, memory, learning, and appetite. Dopamine boosts motivation and arousal.
And there’s more..
The benefits of giving don’t end there.. According to UC Berkeley’s Greater Good magazine, gift-giving promotes a sense of trust and cooperation that strengthens our ties to others. These positive social interactions are core to good mental and physical health.
Giving also evokes gratitude in both the giver and receiver. PositivePsychology.com says gratitude and happiness are strongly correlated.
Incredible huh? And considering these times of social distancing and lockdowns that we’re all contending with right now, I think more giving is definitely called for!
That’s where we come in!
Curated with Conscience differs from other gifting boutiques in that we specialise in gifts that do good.
Our products are sourced from social enterprises, local Australian makers, and premium design-led ethical brands doing good in the world. Each of our hampers contains a “Gift Menu” that tells the inspiring story behind each product.
The pictured Graze hamper features socially conscious products that have some incredibly inspiring stories, including:
- SisterWorks Persian spiced fig jam created by Vajiheh, an asylum seeker from Iran, using her family recipe
- Macadamia and Middle Eastern Spice Dukkah by Summerland House Farm, a Northern NSW social enterprise dedicated to creating opportunities for people with a disability to make the most of their abilities.. Read more about our social impact here.
With all these layers of purpose and goodness, I figure we might actually turbo charge your happiness hormone hit!
